The drum corps show in Riverside, California usually means one thing for the SoCal fans: the last show that they can attend and see live. I must say that with the lineup for tonight’s competition, the SoCal tour finale was a show to remember. Eleven corps competed, seven World Class and five Open Class corps. The Blue Devils continue their winning streak as they took first place in the Riverside competition. Their win included a sweep of every caption except percussion, in which the Santa Clara Vanguard came out on top. The Santa Clara Vanguard are still on the heels of the Blue Devils, coming in second place but taking the percussion caption. The Phantom Regiment took the third spot and opened a 0.5 point spread between them and the Blue Knights, but the Blue Knights are still showing very strong performances. They tied Phantom Regiment in GE and beat them in Music, but again fell to them in the Visual category. The Academy came out swinging tonight as they took the 5th spot. Pacific Crest took 6th and Mandarins took 7th. The three of these corps were within a couple of points and they could swap positions down the road. Look for some battles between these corps.
Gold took the top spot in Open Class competition. They took the Visual and Music captions, ahead of Golden Empire. Golden Empire took second, but topped Gold in GE and percussion. The Watchmen and Impulse are very close and could trade spots as tour moves east. Watchmen came out ahead of Impulse tonight. Incognito rounded out competition and came in 5th place tonight.
