This week brought the 2016 DCI season into full swing. The first regional show was held in Minneapolis, MN and the first Tour of Champions show was held in DeKalb, IL.

After some scheduling conflicts and the possibility of relocation, DCI and the University of Minnesota were able to come to an agreement and the show was to go on as planned. The Santa Clara Vanguard won the night and the first regional was in the books. Vanguard swept all captions and earned a score of 80.975 to beat out The Cavaliers by one point who took second. The Phantom Regiment took third overall with a 76.575 but were beaten by the Blue Stars in the Visual caption.

In Open Class competition at DCI Minnesota, Genesis took the victory sweeping all captions and earning a score of 60.275. The Colt Cadets took second with a 52.800 and River City Rhythm rounded out Open Class with a 50.500.

While DCI Minnesota was taking place, the Bluecoats, Cadets, and Carolina Crown were doing battle in Alexandria, KY. The Bluecoats etched another win under their belts as they edged out Carolina Crown by 0.175 points. The Bluecoats earned a score of 83.300 and won the overall GE and Music captions. Carolina Crown took second with an 83.125 and took first in the Visual caption. The Cadets were not far behind and took third with an 80.900.

Open Class had two big shows this night; one out west and one out east. Out west, the Blue Devils B edged out the Vanguard Cadets. Gold took third and Golden Empire were not far behind them. Out east, Louisiana Stars entered competition and took third behind second place Music City and first place Legends.

The first Tour of Champions show took place on July 17th in DeKalb, Illinois. The Blue Devils, The Cavaliers, The Cadets, Santa Clara Vanguard, Blue Knights, the Bluecoats, and Phantom Regiment met up to compete against each other for the first time this season. It was a battle but there could only be one champion. The Blue Devils came out on top, ending the Bluecoats undefeated streak scoring an 84.700 over the Bluecoats’s 84.100.

Shows continued through the week and starting on Thursday, July 21, the season entered Texas week with shows in Belton, Denton, and Houston. As the shows moved towards the hotter temperatures, competition on the field heated up amongst the corps.

At the Belton, TX show, Phantom Regiment won beating out the Blue Stars and the Madison Scouts. The Crossmen came in fourth and are right on the heels on the Boys from Madison. Carolina Crown earned a big victory as they beat the second place Bluecoats and the third place Cadets in Denton, TX.

On July 22nd, the Bluecoats decided that no corps would go undefeated this season. At DCI Houston, the Bluecoats scored an 86.150 to beat out second place Carolina Crown and third place Blue Devils.

The Texas swing reaches it’s pinnacle as the Southwest Championship takes place at the Alamodome on July 23rd. This is the first time that every world class corps will compete and we’ll be able to see who stands where.
