Michigan City, Indiana is once again hosting the Drum Corps International Open Class Championships. The preliminary round took place on Monday August 8th, 2016. Sixteen corps competed with the top 12 moving on to the Open Class Finals.
Les Stentors kicked off competition by performing first. By performing first, they kicked off all of Finals week for DCI. They presented their 2016 show Enigma, which earned them a 55.325 and 16th place. Les Stentors took 16th in all captions.
The Colt Cadets followed Les Stentors as they presented Journey Within. The Colt Cadets did well this season and scored a 61.550 and overall 15th place. They took 14th in GE and 15th in the Visual and Music captions.
Performing after Colt Cadets was River City Rhythm from Anoka, Minnesota. They presented their 2016 program Shimmer. River City Rhythm scored a 65.700 and took 12th place in prelims. That score earned them another spot in Open Class Finals. River City Rhythm took 11th in the Visual caption, and 12th in the GE and Music captions.
Impulse followed Colt Cadets with a program entitled Music is ____. This show took Impulse to 14th place overall and a score of 61.575. Impulse took 14th in Music and Visual, and 15th in GE.
First time DCI Open Class competitor Shadow Drum and Bugle Corps held their own as they went up against Open Class favorites Blue Devils B and Vanguard Cadets. Their 2016 program, The Mortal Coil earned them a score of 64.175 and 13th place overall; one position shy of Open Class Finals. They took 13th in all captions. We at Corps Writers International would like to congratulate Shadow Drum and Bugle Corps on a great first season in DCI. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for you.
After a short intermission, Raiders took the field and brought Industrial Revolution to life. Raiders once again have earned a spot in Open Class Finals as they took 10th place overall with a 66.688. They took 10th in GE and Visual, and 11th in Music.
While they may not be rookies to DCI, the Guardians are rookies to Finals week and they have made a statement in Prelims. Radioactive is their 2016 production and it earned their first ever spot in Open Class Finals. The Guardians scored a 66.350 and took 11th overall. They took 11th in GE, 12th in Visual, and 9th in Music. Congratulations on your first Open Class Finals appearance.
Another DCI Open Class Finals rookie performed after Guardians. The Louisiana Stars kept us all In Suspense throughout their 2016 season. They earned their first ever spot in Open Class Finals scoring a 67.775 and taking 9th overall. They took 8th in GE, 9th in Visual, and 10th in Music. Congratulations on your first Open Class Finals appearance.
Gold followed the Louisiana Stars as they presented El Dia De Los Muertos. Gold is having a great season and is hoping to make another Finals run. They marched their way to a very solid 8th place scoring a 69.512. Gold took 9th in GE and 8th in Visual and Music.
7th Regiment is having another strong season with their 2016 production Waveforms. The Connecticut corps marched their way to 7th place overall in Prelims with a score of 72.075. They took 6th in the Visual caption, and 7th in the GE and Music captions.
Music City, from Nashville, TN, brought a sense of royalty to the field as they performed Coronation. They’ve had a strong season and they took 6th overall scoring a 73.450 for Open Class Prelims. Music City took 5th in GE, 7th in Visual, and 6th in Music.
Defending their Bronze Medal from 2015, Spartans presented their 2016 production Totem for the Michigan City crowd. They earned a score of 74.712 which puts them in 5th place going into Open Class Finals. Spartans have never finished below 4th place since 2010 so they’re hoping for a strong Finals run. The Spartans took 6th in GE, 4th in Visual, and 5th in Music.
Genesis is once again having a strong season as they present their 2016 production Hell Hath No Fury. Within striking distance of third place, the 4th place Texas corps scored a 75.600. Genesis took 5th in Visual and 4th in the GE and Music captions.
The top three in Michigan City has a new face this season. Legends, from Kalamazoo, Michigan, has had their best season to date. Steadily rising in placement every year, Legends is hoping to earn their first medal at Finals. The Grid is their 2016 production. It primarily features music from Tron: Legacy. Legends scored a 76.150 and took 3rd place overall in Prelims. They took 3rd in all captions.
Defending Open Class Champions Vanguard Cadets are in pursuit of another title as they present The One. The California Open Class powerhouse is seeking their fifth championship and will have to have a phenomenal Finals run if they hope to win. The Vanguard Cadets scored a 78.825 and took 2nd place overall in Prelims. They tied with Blue Devils B for 1st in GE, took 2nd in Visual, and 1st in Music.
In-state rivals of the Vanguard Cadets, the Blue Devils B are on their way to winning their fifth Open Class title as they present their 2016 program To the Moon. The Blue Devils B are in the driver’s seat as they won 2016 Open Class Prelims. They scored a 79.362 overall and tied with the Vanguard Cadets for 1st in GE. They took 1st in Visual and 2nd in Music.
Congratulations to all Open Class corps who performed this season, both at Championship Week and not at Championship Week.
