Prelims day at the Drum Corps International World Championships is every drum corps junkies dream day, aside from Finals night. For those of us able to be in Indianapolis, all you would see is drum corps. There are corps rehearsing at schools in the local area, warm ups are taking place in Military Park, and Lucas Oil Stadium is filled with the sounds of music and fans alike. For those of us who can’t be in Indianapolis, we are still able to see some performances. DCI broadcasts the top 15 corps for Big, Loud, & Live. This event has grown in popularity through the years and is exposing more and more people to the drum corps activity.
Thirty-eight corps performed in Prelims and kicking off competition today was Les Stentors, who performed at 9:17am. Closing out the day was the Bluecoats who performed last at 10:53pm. That is a full day of drum corps and 25 of the 38 corps move on to Semifinals, and from those 25, the top 12 will move to on Finals.
The Bluecoats took the victory tonight by putting some distance between them and the second place Blue Devils. Carolina Crown is still within striking distance as they took third place and are within a point of the first place Bluecoats. The Santa Clara Vanguard are safely in fourth place, and the Cadets and Cavaliers are dueling for the fifth and sixth spots. Tonight, the Cadets came out in fifth with the Cavaliers 0.262 behind in sixth place.
The Bluecoats won General Effect and Music but took third in Visual.
Blue Devils won Visual, took second in General Effect, and third in Music
Carolina Crown took second in Music and Visual, and third in General Effect
Santa Clara Vanguard took fourth in General Effect and Music, and fifth in Visual
Cadets took fifth in General Effect and Music, and sixth in Visual
Cavaliers took sixth in General Effect and Music, and fourth in Visual
There was some shaking up at the bottom end of the 7-12 seeds as the Blue Knights, Phantom Regiment, Blue Stars, Crossmen, Academy, and Madison Scouts compiled the next six spots. The big stories here are Phantom Regiment having the illness that spread through and The Academy sitting in a Finals spot. Phantom’s illness caused them to do a standstill music performance only a few days prior. They rehearsed and performed with a full corps and they performed very well. Academy had a stellar performance and it boosted them up from the 12 seed to being the 11 seed for Semifinals. The Blue Knights are sitting in seventh but Phantom Regiment is within striking distance. And within striking distance of Phantom Regiment is the Blue Stars. Crossmen had a stellar performance tonight and are safely in tenth, Academy jumped to eleventh, and the Madison Scouts fell to the final Finals spot and are sitting in twelfth place.
Blue Knights took seventh in GE and eighth in Visual and Music
Phantom Regiment took seventh in Visual and Music, and ninth in GE
Blue Stars took eighth in GE, and ninth in Visual and Music
Crossmen took eleventh in GE, and tenth in Visual and Music
Academy took tenth in GE, twelfth in Visual, and eleventh in Visual
Madison Scouts took twelfth in GE and Music, and eleventh in Visual
The 13-18 positions is where the Open Class corps start stirring things up for Semifinals. The top 25 from Prelims advance and a few Open Class corps usually move on. Sitting in the spot just outside of Finals is the Boston Crusaders who have been struggling all season to get into the top 12 spots to make Finals. The Troopers are having another great season and are sitting in 14th behind BAC. The Open Class Champion Blue Devils B are sitting in 15th place ahead of the Colts. Mandarins and Oregon Crusaders are sitting in the 17th and 18th positions and will be performing in Semifinals.
Boston Crusaders took 13th in GE, Music, and Visual
Troopers took 14th in GE and Music, and 15th in Visual
Blue Devils B took 15th in GE and Music, and 16th Visual
Colts took 14th in Visual, 16th in GE, and 17th in Music
Mandarins took 17th in GE and Visual, and 18th in Music
Oregon Crusaders took 18th in GE, 19th in Visual, and 16th in Music
The point spread is increasing as we move down the placings but that doesn’t mean that the performances are bad. The kids are performing so well and it’s very hard to judge and place them. Pacific Crest edged out Open Class silver medalist Vanguard Cadets for the 19th place overall but that could change in Semifinals as the gap is only 0.087 points. Spirit of Atlanta is safely in Semifinals and Cascades have to watch out for Open Class Bronze Medalist Legends. Genesis is in a battle with Spartans for the 24/25 placement and round out the corps moving to Semifinals.
Pacific Crest took 18th in Visual, 20th in GE, and 21st in Music
Vanguard Cadets took 19th in GE and Music, and 21st in Visual
Spirit of Atlanta took 20th in Visual and Music, and 21st in GE
Cascades took 22nd in GE and Visual, and 23rd in Music
Legends took 23rd in GE and Visual, and 22nd in Music
Genesis took 24th in Music, 25th in Visual, and 26th in GE
Spartans took 25th in GE and Music, and 24th in Visual
The following corps have sadly performed for the final time this 2016 season and we would like to congratulate all of them on great seasons. The 2016 DCI Prelims featured three first-time Indianapolis performers and they rose to the occasion and blew us away. Sitting just out of Semifinals was the Jersey Surf in the 26th position. They held off the corps from Nashville that is Music City. 7th Regiment held off Pioneer, and Gold was able to fend off late charges from Lucas Oil rookies Louisiana Stars and Guardians. Raiders took the 33rd spot and River City Rhythm was just behind in 34th. The third Lucas Oil rookie Shadow Drum Corps was just behind River City Rhythm, and Impulse was right behind them. Rounding out the season were the Colt Cadets and Les Stentors.
